Kenneth J. Calemmo, chief operating officer of Cooper Levenson Attorneys at Law, has been named chairman of ‘Let Us Eat, Please,’ a free meal program that is designed to fill the gap left when school ends in June, leaving students who get free or reduced-rate breakfast and lunch without those meals.
Calemmo is taking over the helm of the nonprofit organization that was started by his former colleague, James Cooper, retired partner of Cooper Levenson. Cooper created the organization at the request of his daughter who saw firsthand the effects of hunger on her students in the Englewood, Bergen County school system.
“Jim Cooper brought me into the charity, explaining that many kids miss meals when school is not in session over the summer,” said Calemmo. “While larger urban districts have summer programs, families in smaller school districts struggle. They shouldn’t have to choose between putting food on the table or paying rent or electric bills. This program helps to alleviate some of those hard choices.”
‘Let Us Eat, Please’ provides boxes of food every two weeks during the summer to families who are eligible for the federal free or reduced-fee meal program at school. The group served more than 25,000 meals to families in area towns where there is a high percentage of students in the federal meal program.
