On April 24, 2014 Governor Christie signed the legislation, S-441, which requires local school boards to have policies governing the use of social media communication between school employees and students. At a minimum, the policy must include provisions governing communication between school employees and students via email, cell phones, social networking websites and other Internet-based social media. Pursuant to the new law, school districts have 120 days from the date of signing to comply with the new law. If you do not have a social media policy, you must adopt one by August 22, 2014. If you have a social media policy, please check to make sure it specifically complies with the new law to address e-mail, cell phones, social networking sites and other Internet-based social media communications between school employees and students.
